Health And Gene Tips

The following is intended to raise awareness levels, not to prescribe treatment or offer self-diagnosis.

Test Tube Puppies

It took 37 years for researchers at Cornell University to find a method that allows them to conserve endangered species. The technique now has worked on a female dog who gave birth to seven puppies. The problem was finding the ideal time to remove the egg from the female’s oviduct (Fallopian tubes). The breakthrough was leaving the egg in the oviduct for one extra day. Now researchers have the ability to produce high-quality embryos and begin to eliminate heritable diseases in dogs. More research is need. I will report when they have more news.

Success in the world of dogs depends on your knowledge and understanding of your problems. Try our DVD and book "Breeding Dogs to Win".

Low Calorie Diets – longer life for dogs

Recent studies found that dogs would age less and live nearly two years longer if they ate less. A 14-yearlong study by Nestle Purina PetCare Co. involved 48 dogs from seven different litters which were divided into pairs . One was fed 25 % less than its siblings starting at 8 weeks of age. The thinner dogs lived for a median 13 years and had fewer diseases compared to their all-you–can eat partners, who lived for a median 11.2 years. One theory is that caloric restriction causes metabolic shifts that affect the rate of aging by slowing down some of the metabolic processes that cause cell damage that leads to disease. The same effect is likely to hold true for humans.

Stick Dog Pedigree Software

Stickdog Pedigrees DVD LabelThis popular software was written for Windows and has helped breeders understand the strengths and weaknesses of their pedigrees. With one click of the mouse, it generates the Traditional pedigree with names, titles and certifications. A second click generates the Stick Dog pedigree with color codes for the seven structural traits of conformation. A third click generates the Symbols Pedigree which is used to code for health, carriers and affected ancestors. A User Manual provides step by step instructions. TRY IT FOR FREE FOR 30 DAYS.

Puppies and How to Choose Them

Choosing the Best Puppy DVD CoverMost breeders have a system or a theory on how to pick the best puppy, but a study shows that breeders are wrong about 60% of the time. While no one method is perfect, there is a DVD called “Choosing the Best Puppy” that has proven to offer a selection method that works. It also includes a demonstration of how to stimulate the neurological system in newborn pups.

Seminars For Continuing Education

Nothing beats useful information. Take for example, the seminar called “Structure, Movement and Pedigree Analysis”. This seminar focuses on learning how to recognize good structure and movement and how to use your hands to see what your eyes can’t. “Making of a Super Dog” is a seminar that is based on new research and takes the student through a step by step process of producing a healthier, smarter and more trainable dog with stronger heart beats, greater tolerance of stress and greater resistance to disease. If you do not see a seminar near your residence, ask your club to host one. They meet AKC’s annual educational requirements. Listen to the synopsis of each seminar. Go to our Seminars page
